Position Description:

The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks non-tenure track adjunct faculty to teach the International Water: Issues & Policy course listed below within the Environmental Sciences & Policy program. The course will be taught in a synchronous online format beginning in Fall 2020.  The instructor will teach from a classroom studio location at the Washington, DC campus, and the students will attend the course remotely via Zoom.  Of particular interest are candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds.

International Water: Issues & Policy - This course is a broad survey of international water issues facing the 21st century. Topics to be covered include, water security, privatization of water service delivery, conflict and cooperation on trans-boundary rivers, the role of large multi-purpose reservoirs (for hydropower, water supply, irrigation), water as a human right, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on water supply and sanitation, the role of water in food security, water institutions and policies, climate change.  Any discourse today on sustainable development is not complete without a discussion of the important role of water to society, economic growth, and poverty reduction. Our objective in this course is to gain a broad overview of these issues, primarily from the sustainable development lens, and to critically evaluate these challenges from a multidisciplinary perspective (e.g. economics, environment, social, engineering, public health). This is important as solutions to water problems will require many different disciplines and expertise working together.

This course covers topics such as:

  • Water types (blue, green, white)
  • Water security
  • Role of water in food security
  • Role of multipurpose reservoirs
  • Climate change and water
  • Conflict and cooperation on trans-boundary rivers
  • Water diplomacy
  • Water as a human right
  • Water and gender
  • Water governance and institutions
  • Role of water to society, economic growth, and poverty reduction
  • Privatization of water service delivery

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: A successful candidate would ideally be able to begin teaching on August 31, 2020.

  • An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental policy, or sustainability with a master’s degree at minimum
  • Relevant experience in water policy, water security, hydropower, climate change and water impacts, and/or related environmental fields
  • One year of college-level online teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental policy, or sustainability
  • The background to teach a wide variety of courses in the environmental science and policy fields.
