Save the Children UK is an international non-governmental organisation that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries. Save the Children is looking to engage a person or team to develop a 5 day short course on WaSH for mid-level field practitioners. The course will be for practitioners in all regions however the first iteration will be delivered to staff working on the response to WaSH needs for people affected by the war in Syria. The target audience for this course will be field level WaSH practitioners with some formal technical training on WaSH issues. They may or may not be engineers but will have at least 3 years of experience or equivalent in the WaSH sector. At the end of the course participants will be able to lead the analysis of public health risks, design appropriate WaSH interventions and manage and monitor their implementation at field level in an emergency context meeting quality standards.

Deliverables for consultant:

  • Contextual assessment of WaSH capacity needs for mid-level practitioners working on areas affected by the war in Syria for definition of content
  • Proposal for module content and methodologies for delivery
  • Feedback and discussion on content and methodologies (with SC team)
  • Design of first draft of modules and session planEach module package will include:
    • session plan
    • presentation
    • open source resources (multi-media) built into the presentation
    • variety of delivery techniques based on adult-learning principles
    • Review and feedback (by SC team and likely co-facilitators)
    • Incorporate feedback and finalise modules

The consultant may be invited to join in the facilitation of the modules if available and it is of interest to both parties. However, this would be discussed at a later date and would be addressed in a separate agreement.

Profile:

  • WaSH specialist with knowledge of the Syria crisis and the WaSH context
  • Experienced in developing training materials using adult learning methodologies
  • Solid communication skills, both face-to-face and via remote working
  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge of online learning frameworks or platforms
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Commitment to the mission, vision and values of Save the Children
  • Arabic speaker an advantage

  • WaSH programme strategy design – particularly on sanitation
  • WaSH programme management
  • Integration of WaSH with Health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, FSL programmes
  • Linking of humanitarian and long term WaSH
  • Sustainable WaSH model
