A decision by an Irish charity to grow a forest and vegetable plot in the middle of a war in Afghanistan has reaped huge rewards almost two decades later. International aid agency Concern Worldwide was on the frontline of the humanitarian crisis in the country’s north east region during the ‘War on Terror’ in 2002 when there was a severe shortage of food. The combination of failed harvests, conflict and the post 9/11 coalition aerial bombing campaign created a serious humanitarian crisis and emergency aid responders were doing everything they could to help people trying to survive. A team from Concern was providing immediate food aid to support thousands of desperate families, but the team on the ground knew that this was just part of the solution needed.
