Since the 1980s the Pacific Institute has maintained a historical and current database (chronology and map) of cases where water has been a trigger for fighting, has been used as a weapon or been disrupted by human conflict. Recent analysis indicates that such cases have doubled in the last ten years. What is happening? Is this research an indicator / predictor of future water wars particularly in North Africa, the Middle East and India? And where next? How much is climate change a driver of increasing incidence of water-related human conflict? Can new tools help us to future-cast future water conflict? Is the world listening to the alarm bells? We ask Peter Gleick.
