The King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) is a global health project that aims to help strengthen Sierra Leone’s health system by improving clinical services and facility infrastructure. Since January 2013, King’s has had a small in-country team of Engineers working to improve the infrastructure of hospitals in Freetown.
KSLP is looking to recruit a new Volunteer WASH Construction Manager/Engineer for its in-country team from November 2015 – April 2016.
Key Responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing and carrying out assessments of sites for the implementation of planned engineering works;
- Reviewing the design of assigned engineering works following international and humanitarian best practice and in line with donor and local authority policies and guidelines;
- Preparing technical documents such as tenders, BOQs, and procurement, and overseeing material and equipment purchases and delivery;
- Managing, supervising and monitoring progress during each phase of a project, resolving design and development problems as they arise;
- Providing timely technical advice, site inspection protocols, and feedback to the contractors on site on a regular basis;
- Ensuring that project work sites meet legal guidelines, environmental directives, and health and safety requirements and ensuring that the contractors comply with timely and correct use of safety practices.
It is essential that the applicant have the following:
- Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Civil /Mechanical Engineering, 2 year Associates Degree in Construction Management or similar from an accredited institution
- Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience in design and/or managing construction related to WASH projects
- Personal Characteristics: Fluency in English; high degree of self- initiative and drive in problem resolution; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to cope with a dynamic and sometimes stressful environment; good track record of managing and leading a team; experience in capacity building of local organizations
Prior experience in Africa or other developing countries would be advantageous.
The Construction Manager/Engineer is a 6 month unpaid voluntary position, but the successful candidate will be provided with the following support:
