USAID’s Leveraging Economic Opportunities (LEO) Project has commissioned value chain assessments for horticulture, maize (food and feed), legumes/pulses (plant-based protein, food and feed), and animal protein in Sierra Leone, with a focus on Tonkolili and Bombali districts, including relevant trade corridors. These focus on local, national and regional end market opportunities and value chains, with consideration for gender, climate change, input markets and the business enabling environment.
This assignment is contingent on funding from USAID but is expected to take place in from July through August 2015, with fieldwork in from mid-July through early August. The expected level of effort is 20 days, over 6 weeks, with a 6-day work week.
Undertake and support activities in the areas of:
- Desk research/Document Review
- Identifying of consumption and production trends
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis of product end markets and the value chain
- Evaluating cross-cutting factors (e.g., EVD, Political economy/enabling environment)
- Collecting documents, synthesizing secondary research, scheduling/coordinating interviews and meetings
- Providing input on design, undertaking field work (surveys, focus groups, interviews)
- Transcribing and synthesizing data, evaluating findings, and supporting the team as needed.
- Contributing to a detailed presentation to USAID
- Writing all assigned sections of report, and providing input and analysis for overall recommendations
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences/ Natural Resources Management, Agriculture, or related field.
- 10 years relevant experience in climate change/NRM/environment as it relates to agricultural development, agribusiness, trade, economic growth and/or food security, with at least five in developing countries, preferably in Sierra Leone or West Africa
- Demonstrated knowledge of target commodity types, value chain assessments, and best practices in inclusive value chain development.
- Creativity, willingness to innovate, think systemically and propose catalytic interventions.
- Able to work well individually and on a team.
- Strong English writing and communication skills required.
- Skilled with email, mobile communications, and word processing and spreadsheet software.
