For the position of WASH Specialist, Build Change is seeking an experienced WASH Professional with design and construction management experience. In addition to the implementation of the WASH component of on-going Build Change housing projects, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing a WASH knowledge and resource base for Build Change in Haiti. The position demands the ability to design, review, and implement new construction and retrofits of residential sanitation facilities, as well as a clear understanding of the challenges of sanitation design in the context of a developing country. The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness and ability to navigate said challenges in a culturally appropriate and sustainable manner. The WASH Specialist will be expected to instruct builders and engineers on the successful implementation of sanitation facilities, document project quality and complete progress reports. In addition, the applicant will have proven leadership abilities, demonstrated experience in project coordination and demonstrated ability to communicate technical terms and concepts to non-technical persons. This position reports to the Haiti Director of Programs and Partnerships and the Director of Engineering and will work closely with Haiti Lead Engineer. Responsibilities:
- Develop comprehensive WASH design and implementation resources for use at Build Change in Haiti
- Train Build Change Haitian engineering and construction supervision staff in the use of said resources
- Mentor and oversee Build Change Haiti engineering and construction supervision staff to provide hands-on training to builders and homeowners
- Check design documents, drawings, bills of quantity, and construction inspection checklists
- Work with structural engineering team to ensure proper, safe and disaster-resistant implementation of WASH facilities in retrofit homes
- Represent Build Change in discussions with relevant stakeholders, such as homeowners, builders, government officials, relief agency partners
- Prepare weekly, monthly, project, and final reports.
- Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline (e.g. civil or environmental engineering)
- Minimum 5 years professional experience in WASH design and implementation, at least one year of WASH experience relevant to the specific context in Haiti, with demonstrated experience in delivering outcomes on time
- Effective, timely and clear professional communication skills, including formal and informal oral communication, written communication and visual aids
- Skillset for managing project tasks, including ownership over milestones, work plans, reporting, using computer tools such as Excel and PowerPoint
- Fluent in English and in French or Creole.
- Valid passport
- Basic understanding of the fundamentals of building design and construction
- Experience in teaching or instruction
- International development experience and willingness and ability to live and work in a post-disaster setting in a developing country; experience in Haiti is a strong plus
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
- No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor.
