Environmental Peacebuilding Update Editor

Jan 5, 2015 | ELI & UNEP

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the University of Tokyo, and McGill University seek an Editor for the Environmental Peacebuilding Update, a biweekly email newsletter that is circulated to over 2000 subscribers in the field of environmental peacebuilding.

The Update Editor will be responsible for compiling, reviewing, and curating external content on environmental peacebuilding for inclusion in the Update; assembling the Update every two weeks; and ensuring that it maintains a consistent and professional style, scope, and editorial voice. The Update Editor may also be asked to assist with the management of the Environmental Peacebuilding Online Knowledge Platform and Community of Practice (for more information on the knowledge platform and the community of practice, see www.environmentalpeacebuilding.org). Tasks may include researching content (news, publications, events, etc.), posting to the knowledge platform and--depending on the candidate--developing original content for the site.

The position may be partially or fully off-site, and much work can be conducted remotely. However, candidates in the Washington, DC area are strongly encouraged to work on-site for a limited number of hours each week.

Candidates should:

  • Possess superior research, writing, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Have a strong desire to gain knowledge of the environmental field, as well as interest in natural resource management and/or peacebuilding
  • Be focused, independent, reliable, and meticulous
  • Be available to work at least 15-20 hours per week, including at least an hour a day

Familiarity with communications, web design, and graphic design are helpful but not required. Fluency in French or Spanish is also a plus.

Law and master's students are encouraged to apply. Candidates who have already completed their undergraduate degree are preferred. A strong academic background is required, but specific environmental experience is not mandatory. Compensation is not available.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis. We are seeking candidates who are available to start work as soon as possible, but there is no fixed start date. Candidates are asked to commit to work for a minimum of 6 months.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume and 3-5 page analytical writing sample to info@environmentalpeacebuilding.org. The writing sample may be an excerpt from a longer work.

ELI is an equal opportunity employer strongly committed to achieving an inclusive, diverse workforce that values every individual. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
