Swisspeace is a practice-oriented peace research institute. Swisspeace contributes to the improvement of conflict prevention and conflict transformation by producing innovative research, shaping discourses on international peace policy, developing and applying new peacebuilding tools and methodologies, supporting and advising other peace actors, as well as by providing and facilitating spaces for analysis, discussion, critical reflection and learning.

For our work in the field of ‘Business & Peace’ we are looking for a:

Program Officer (60 – 80%)

Starting Date: 1 July 2017 (or by agreement)

The overall goal of swisspeace in the area of Business & Peace is to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between the activities of business actors, conflict prevention and conflict transformation. We analyze the role of business actors in politically unstable contexts and support private companies in identifying their conflict -related risks and in developing conflict sensitive business practices

Your tasks:

  • Implementation of the swisspeace Business & Peace strategy and further development of the theme
  • Develop and conduct consultancy services for private business actors in assessing their conflict related risks and developing conflict-sensitive business practices
  • Acquisition and implementation of consultancy mandates for corporate and government entities
  • Design and implementation of capacity building measures and trainings
  • Establishing and nurturing contacts with partners and clients in Switzerland and abroad (business community, international organizations , NGOs und government actors)
  • Support in the implementation of mandates and projects on the topic of statehood and governance and advise other thematic units of swisspeace on business related issues

Your profile:

  • Strong interest in civilian peacebuilding and international cooperation and substantial work experience in relevant thematic areas
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and track record of working with private sector companies on issues related to risk analysis/management, human rights and/or conflict-sensitive business practices
  • Familiarity with national/international policies and debates related to business, conflicts and human rights
  • Background in business management, economics or law
  • Willingness to travel frequently, including to conflict-affected countries
  • Strong analytical, writing and communication skills
  • Proficiency in English ; good command of German and French is an advantage
