The Environmental Security program at the Henry L. Stimson Center seeks a highly motivated candidate to join the team as a full-time paid intern. Stimson's Environmental Security program conducts research and analysis on pressing environmental challenges facing communities around the globe, including illegal fishing, maritime security, and the climate emergency. Working with international stakeholders across governments, civil society, businesses, and the security community, the Environmental Security program develops informed solutions that can be taken to action on the ground and in the water.
This full-time paid internship will run from October 2023 to October 2024. The intern(s) will be paid $17 hourly and are expected to work 40 hours per week.
Major Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position will include research, professional development, and project administration:
- Carry out research and analysis to help draft the Environmental Security program's publications and support its activities.
- Draft correspondence and take notes at the Program's meetings, and public and private events.
- Provide logistical and operational support for the Program's events and activities.
- Keep up to date on emerging trends and breaking news in the Environmental Security program's fields of work.
- Manage the Program's contacts and support institutional memory.
- Support the development of the Program, as needed, by taking part in internal discussions and by sharing innovative ideas.
- Perform other tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Must be a graduate student or a recent graduate from any field, with a strong interest in international affairs related to climate change adaptation; ocean issues; illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; maritime security; and/or ecosystem services.
- Must demonstrate proven interest in the core mission of the Stimson Center.
- Interest in and knowledge of a range of core topics related to the Environmental Security Program's themes and priorities.
- Must possess excellent writing and editing skills.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Must be organized and detail oriented.
- Must be able to work effectively independently, without supervision, and as part of a team.
- Preference is given to candidates available to work at least 32 hours per week. Applicants should confirm their time commitment in their cover letter.
- Only candidates legally allowed to work in the United States and residing in the DC metro area will be considered.
Professional Development
Applicants should be highly motivated and sincere in their desire for an internship that is challenging and professional in nature. Interns can expect close and consistent interaction with program staff, including their respective program directors and deputy directors. The Environmental Security Program's intern(s) will also have access to the Program's network.
The intern's supervisors will evaluate the intern's performance at the close of the internship. The intern will also be encouraged to evaluate the internship program at Stimson and their individual experience.
