E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. It works on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Its goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. E3G is looking for a Policy Advisor to join its Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics team to develop its work on EU-China climate diplomacy.
The Role
The candidate will work as a Policy Advisor for the Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics team. This role will sit at the heart of the Programme’s work on tracking EU-China diplomacy and building coalitions around shared diplomatic strategy to reach agreement to new and ambitious climate policy.
The candidate will work closely with colleagues across E3G offices in London, Brussels, Berlin and Washington DC, drawing on expert academic and industry insight to develop concise analysis on the EU’s and China’s climate policies and politics and the impact of EU and Chinese domestic politics on international climate diplomacy.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor and track progress, developments and wider context related to Chinese climate and foreign policies.
- Prepare clear and accessible research, quantitative and qualitative, to inform policy briefings, reports, and presentations regarding international climate politics, Chinese climate policies and climate diplomacy between China, the EU, and other major emitters.
- Contribute research undertaking short pieces of political analysis and help draft internal and external communications materials, e.g., policy briefings, reports, social media content.
- Support the team with the organisation of convenings, participate in meetings with external stakeholders and representing E3G in some forums.
- Support outreach by maintaining regular exchanges with external stakeholders and building new relationships with fellow think tanks, members of the press, and policymakers. Perform administrative support activities to facilitate internal/external engagement efforts.
- Work across E3G teams and act as a focal point and resource within E3G for general and China related matters of climate governance.
- International travel may be required from time to time.
Person specification
- At least 3 years’ relevant professional experience and track record in a relevant setting e.g., political, policy or research in government or international institution, civil society, think tank or research institute.
- An undergraduate degree, and ideally a post graduate qualification, in a relevant area. This could include politics, social sciences, economics, finance, climate change, environment or international relations.
- Robust knowledge in one or more of these areas: international or Chinese climate policy, Chinese politics, foreign policy, trade, energy or a related field.
- Strong research, analytical and thinking skills with intellectual curiosity and proficiency working with complex information.
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills and the ability to manage relations in culturally diverse environments.
- Strong team player who pays attention to detail and works collaboratively to support team outcomes.
- Well organised person with the ability to prioritise and navigate planned and ad-hoc tasks to deliver desired outputs towards team outcomes.
- Very strong written and spoken communication skills and impeccable written and spoken English. Working proficiency in Mandarin Chinese would be an advantage.
Further details
This role is offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of further extension. This role is located in London. E3G operates a flexible working environment, with staff expected to come to the office at least twice a week on average.
E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in the jurisdiction in which E3G employs them. E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance or visa support.
A remuneration package competitive with the non-profit sector will be offered. Salary is in the range of £34,500 to £40,498 depending on experience. Benefits include: 25 days leave plus additional leave between Christmas and new year, generous pension contribution and cycling scheme.
