The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs is a Norwegian government agency and research organization based in Oslo.

NUPI is looking for a senior research fellow with a professional interest and background in climate-related peace and security risks.

The researcher will produce high-quality research and contribute to a series of fact sheets on countries on the agenda of the UN Security Council, with a focus on the indirect and non-linear causal pathways between climate change and its impacts on peace and security.

The research position is in the Climate Peace and Security Risk (CPSR) project, which is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This project is carried out in collaboration with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and is aimed at backstopping the work of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry during its period as an elected member of the Security Council. The project is situated in the Peace, Conflict and Development Research Group and is carried out under the umbrella of the NUPI Center for UN and Global Governance.

The primary objective of the project is to generate reliable, relevant, timely and actionable information and analysis on climate-related peace, security and development risks relating to specific countries and regions on the UN Security Council agenda. The project will also stimulate global networking among researchers and policymakers through a series of dialogues, and it also aims to establish a Nordic and Baltic Climate, Peace and Security Network.

Duration

This is a 2-year project-based position that will start in 2021 and end in 2023.

Your role

  • Research: Undertake and publish academic research, contribute to a series of fact sheets on countries on the agenda of the UN Security Council, publish related blogs and opinion pieces and present the research at international seminars and conferences.
  • Programme coordination: Assist the project leader with coordinating, planning and reporting, including budgeting and the financial management of the project, reporting to the funder, and coordinating with global partners and regional network members. 

Your profile

  • PhD in a relevant subject, such as Environmental Studies, Sustainability Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Security Studies, International Relations, Political Science, etc.
  • An existing publication record in climate peace and security or related fields will be an added advantage.
  • Quantitative skills and experience with managing datasets will be an added advantage.
  • Very good oral presentation and writing skills in English. Norwegian and other relevant language skills will be an advantage.
  • Professional and service-oriented with the ability to promote collaboration in an international environment.
  • High work capacity and ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.
  • Social media presence and experience with social media campaigns.
  • This post is suitable for someone early in their career. No prior work experience is required, but relevant experience will be an added advantage.
