We seek a PhD scholar who can contribute to our ongoing research agenda on business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Of particular interest is research on or related to one of more of the following topics: i) The ethical obligations and dilemmas of multinational corporations operating in undemocratic, corrupt, and/or politically unstable countries and contexts. ii) The conduct of corporations in countries characterized by such governance challenges. This can include analysing incentives and disincentives for human rights violations and questionable business practices, determinants and effectiveness of corporate-financed development projects, and analyses of the political activities of multinational corporations. iii) The effectiveness and political economy of national and international initiatives and regulation aimed at improving corporate conduct and accountability, including supply chain due diligence and disclosure requirements. iv) The bases of stakeholder power vis-à-vis corporations, including the conditions under which employees exert influence on corporate policies and activities, and the effects thereof.
Applicants need to have a strong background in quantitative empirical methods, and a good understanding of international business theory and/or economic theory. Familiarity with ethical theory is also a clear advantage. We are particularly interested in applicants with an international research orientation, and a focus on emerging economies will be considered favourably. Candidates whose background and research interests are predominantly qualitative or based on legal analyses fall outside the scope of the position.
The PhD programme provides training that enables students to produce original research of high quality. The programme has a strong international focus, with opportunities to visit other top international universities and business schools. Specialised courses offered by other business schools and universities complement our in-house course sequence.
