Postdoctoral Fellowship in Extractive Industries, Transparency and Citizen Engagement

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life. The postdoctoral fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for an early career researcher to contribute to research seeking to improve natural resource governance in resource-rich, developing countries. The position is available at the Department of Geography and is a fixed-term position for two years. The available postdoc project is to examine citizen engagement in local natural resource management in the context of the transnational extractive industries operating in the Global South. The focus of the postdoc project is on information disclosure, transparency and the formation of ‘agency’ through the making of citizenship, and how these relate to material and discursive struggles over access, control and management of high-value natural resources and resource revenues. The postdoc fellow will in particular use a qualitative fieldwork approach in which s/he facilitates the development of information innovations by citizens, such as new ways of thinking about information disclosure in the context of natural resource management. The postdoc fellow will contribute to the development of an innovative methodological approach that combines quantitative field experiments and qualitative field intervention. Fieldwork will be conducted in Indonesia.

Currently the Department employs 9 professors, 7 associate professors, 2 researchers, 2 post doctors and 13 PhD candidates. The Department has defined four strategic research areas: Natural hazards and the effects of climate change; Environment, resources and management; Mobility, transnationalism and inequality; and Innovation and regional changes. Responsibilities

The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Conduct research within the framework described above
  • Contribute to and to work in close collaboration with the Extractive industries, transparency and citizen engagement project team members at the Department of Geography, NTNU; Geography Research Unit, University of Oulu, Finland; and Department of Politics and Government, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia
  • Conduct fieldwork in Indonesia
  • Publish articles in international peer-reviewed, high quality journals
  • Disseminate research results through conference and workshop participation and other relevant outlets, including communication to user groups and the general public
  • Contribute to relevant grant proposals for external funding
  • Contribute to the organization of project activities (such as meetings, workshops and outreach events)
Employment will be activated in accordance with existing regulations of 31.01.2006 and Regulations for the required duties and employment conditions at NTNU. 

Qualifications

  • A Norwegian PhD degree, or a foreign PhD degree approved as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD, in geography or another relevant field is a prerequisite.
  • The applicant must have solid and documented experience in relevant qualitative methods and from fieldwork in the Global South.
  • The candidate must demonstrate competence in academic publication through previous publications in good quality, peer-reviewed academic outlets.
  • A high standard of written English is required.

Salary and conditions

The postdoctoral fellow will be paid according to salary scale 24 in the national salary scheme, from gross NOK 490 500,- per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme. Terms and conditions of the position are subject to the current Acts and Regulations for Norwegian State Employees. Primary residence in Trondheim is a prerequisite. A good work environment is characterized by diversity.
