China and Vietnam have agreed to manage their maritime disputes in the South China Sea through peaceful negotiations based on mutual interests, Chinese state media reported yesterday. The agreement between the two neighbours was reached following a meeting in Beijing between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Vietnamese Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, said China’s state-owned People’s Daily.

“The special bonds of friendship between China and Vietnam help make it possible for both sides to handle the maritime dispute in a constructive way. Both sides agreed that with similar political systems and development paths, both sides will share a common destiny and benefit greatly from each other’s development,” said the report.
