Campaign group Global Witness has called proposed European conflict minerals legislation “weak and ineffective”.
It criticised the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee following its vote on amendments to the proposed legislation, saying it had "wasted a ground-breaking opportunity". "The committee voted in favour of a weak and ineffective law that, if passed, would undermine global attempts to clean up the trade," Global Witness said in a joint civil society statement. "It would require only a tiny number of companies importing four key minerals into Europe to source them responsibly and transparently."
