The Director of Advocacy and Impact Strategy will lead and improve advocacy and campaigns, working closely with the Founding Director and senior leadership team to maximize the impact of Enough’s work. While continuing its use of major grassroots campaigns, rigorous analysis and reporting, and engagement with policymakers, influencers, leaders, and governments, the Enough Project is embarking on an array of new and dynamic initiatives, including an expansion of the Satellite Sentinel Project to include in-depth forensic investigations to map and shatter illicit financial networks that fuel war and atrocities.
This position will play a decisive role in developing and executing strategies across all of Enough’s initiatives and programs to ensure mission-driven impact. In doing so, the Director of Advocacy and Impact Strategy will leverage and further develop an arsenal of assets and relationships, mobilize and align Enough’s division teams, manage broad grassroots constituencies and campaigns, lead government and policy engagement, and track and evaluate qualitative and quantitative metrics of success. This individual will be responsible for supervising campaigns, advocacy, and Enough Fellow staff, as well as providing them with clear and effective guidance and support—especially with regard to shared priorities and strategic approaches across teams. The Director of Advocacy and Impact Strategy will work with the Founding Director and relevant staff to develop and lead the implementation of scalable campaigns that effectively leverage the organization's research, engage its activist base, and utilize its key relationships. This individual will mentor and supervise advocacy and campaign staff while providing effective guidance and support, especially with regard to advocacy initiatives, policy priorities, and strategic approaches across teams.
Responsibilities:
Advocacy and impact strategies
- Direct development and implementation of innovative advocacy and campaign ideas related to Enough outputs, maximizing staff engagement in advocacy across teams.
- Work with the Founding Director and the senior team to develop and plan implementation of integrated impact strategies for each major product or policy initiative.
- Develop, implement, and enforce procedures for the timely and effective tracking of advocacy and campaign efforts.
- Direct the strategy and implementation of campaigns and initiatives, such as the Raise Hope for Congo campaign.
Media and communications
- Work with Communications and other teams to adapt policy content for advocacy purposes, including assisting with developing op-eds and other media products.
- Support the Founding Director and Communications Director in identifying key media opportunities, speaking engagements, and strategic relationships that successfully leverage organizational goals.
- Make media appearances to advance Enough’s brand and agenda.
External and representational
- In consultation with the Founding Director and relevant staff, develop and implement advocacy strategies on the Hill and in the administration.
- In consultation with the Founding Director and relevant staff, expand Enough’s network of contacts within the advocacy community and deepen Enough’s relationships with influential actors in the United States and overseas.
- In consultation with the Founding Director and relevant staff, liaise with partners and other relevant organizations and institutions to gather feedback and input to Enough’s advocacy work.
- Represent the organization with advocates, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders.
Senior leadership
- Work closely with the senior team to ensure that Enough’s research initiatives accurately reflect the organization’s policy priorities and that policy prescriptions are consistent and aligned across all platforms and in all forums.
- Participate in senior staff meetings, discussions, and decision making.
- Participate in Enough strategic planning and the establishment of priorities, goals, and impact strategies.
- Develop and manage a program to help staff improve their advocacy; expand the advocacy capacity of Enough by supporting the professional development of all relevant staff with appropriate training.
- Advise and monitor the development of budgets in relation to advocacy teams.
- Supervise and provide regular performance feedback and review to direct reports.
- Support team leaders in their supervisory roles.
- Assure contracts are managed in relation to these initiatives.
- Ensure there is a consistent approach to field travel for advocacy teams and consultants, including budget, expenses, insurance, communication, security, etc.
- Approve advocacy expenses in consultation with team leaders, the Managing Director, and the Founding Director.
- Work with the Managing Director and the senior team to regularly assess and improve core functions to support staff; collaborate with the senior management team to develop systems of project management, tracking, scheduling, evaluation, and team communication to further strengthen and sustain the impact of Enough’s work.
- As a member of the senior management team, work to build the morale and capacity for success of every member of the Enough staff.
- Work in consultation with the Development Director, the Founding Director, and other relevant staff to support the development and implementation of innovative fundraising strategies using social media, crowdsourcing, peer-to-peer fundraising, cause marketing campaigns, advertising campaigns, and other approaches to increase Enough’s brand recognition and expand the individual donor base.
- Contribute to regular reviews of Enough’s strategic plans, operating plans, record keeping, and knowledge-management practices for the continuous improvement of organizational planning and to track progress toward defined objectives and communicate organizational effectiveness to internal and external stakeholders.
- Foster shared understanding around organizational mission, vision, values, and goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred.
- A combination of at least eight years of senior experience in advocacy and campaigns, government affairs, the nongovernmental-organization community, conflict prevention, and international policy; work experience in Enough’s current focus countries preferred.
- Strong understanding of the policymaking process within the U.S. government is essential.
- Demonstrated success and experience organizing grassroots and/or student constituencies.
- Strong understanding of the U.N. system a plus.
- Strong knowledge of countries in conflict, the developing world, and public policy related to these fields.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and excellence in written and oral communication.
- Team player with superb interpersonal, organizational, and management skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously and maximize employee contributions.
- A high level of personal energy, dependability, and commitment.
- Ability to keep calm and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Good humor and general problem-solving skills.
