About the role:
This is a 4 month (Sept-Dec 2017), replacement role with unaccompanied terms based in Nairobi, Kenya with a salary of Grade 1 €28,198 - €31,332
You will report to the Somalia Country Emergency Coordinator, and work closely with Emergency Programme Manager, Programme Director, Programme Managers, Systems Manager, Grants & Information Manager, Country Finance Controller, and HQ Desk Officer.
We would like you to start as soon as possible, as the current post holder has already vacated the role.
Your purpose:
The position is to assist Concern’s Somalia programme in scaling up emergency actions in response to extreme drought and risk of famine in Somalia. The temporary emergency programme officer will be based in the Nairobi office and primarily assist the Emergency Coordinator in organizing in- and out-flows of emergency programme communication and reporting.
You will be responsible for:
Proposal Development
- Support on concept note/proposal writing and coordination as new opportunities arise
- Provide support in managing rapid assessments as necessary
Grants Management & Donor Reporting
- With guidance from the Emergency Coordinator, assist in the effective implementation of emergency preparedness & response component of the country programme
- Support in maintaining a beneficiary database and programme photos,
- Working alongside the Grants and Information Manager, ensure production and sharing of high quality up-to-date reports and statistics from the field to be shared with donors,
- Support compilation and writing of sit-reps,
- Support the Emergency Coordinator in producing donor reports on time and to a high standard
Coordination and representation
- Represent Concern in coordination meetings: clusters, NGO Consortium, etc. as needed and generate briefs from these meetings,
- Ensure Concern’s responses are updated within the 4W matrices, and other coordination tools,
- Provide mapping of emergency interventions and present visually.
Communication
- Assist in organizing, developing or editing communications materials and case studies, human interest stories, etc in line with donor and internal requests.
The Country Emergency Coordinator and Emergency Programme Manager will provide a full briefing and relevant documents upon arrival. They will continue to provide support and contextual information on a needs basis for the duration for the duration of the assignment
Your skills and experience will include:
Essential:
- Degree in Humanitarian Assistance, Development Studies, International relations or other relevant discipline
- Excellent English writing and communication skills with background in research, documentation and/or report writing
- Minimum 1 year experience in a similar capacity in an NGO Overseas
- Knowledge of major humanitarian donor requirements (ECHO, DFID, Irish Aid etc)
- Good knowledge and competence of computer applications such as Microsoft Office
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload, using initiative when appropriate
- Ability to cope with stress, work under pressure often to strict deadlines
- Ability to manage multiple job tasks
- Self-motivated, progressive and proactive
- Sensitive to gender issues
Desirable:
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Basic understanding of Somalia’s humanitarian and political situation
- Basic knowledge of I/NGOs mandates and their humanitarian and developmental work
