The Investigations Officer of The Sentry works closely with the Senior Investigations Manager, Enough Policy Director, and Founding Director of Enough to plan and execute investigations for one of the five countries covered by The Sentry, an investigative initiative launched by Enough in 2015 to counter the financing of conflict and mass atrocities in Africa. This position works to ensure that investigative efforts support the policy goals of Enough.

Location: Washington D.C. 

Status:  Full-time, Non-exempt

Reports to: Senior Investigations Manager

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
Investigations and Outreach

• Work with Founding Director, Enough Policy Director, Senior Investigations Manager, Policy Analysts, Senior Advisors, and Partners to conceptualize, plan, and executive public-facing investigations and serve as lead author of public facing reports produced on one of the following countries: Sudan, South Sudan, or the Democratic Republic of Congo;
• Develop proposals for each investigation and public-facing Sentry report for one of the countries covered by The Sentry;
• Help shape priorities for data acquisition and source development for investigations;
• Contribute to development of Sentry-specific investigative methods;
• Contribute to development of partnerships, as appropriate, with investigators, media, and NGOs relevant to The Sentry’s work, and maintain responsibility for contracts with such partners;  
• Represent The Sentry at subject-related meetings and with the media, specifically with respect to the results of investigations;
• Contribute to dossiers and other written materials provided by The Sentry to governments or the private sector;
• Routinely engage with sources, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the private sector, as appropriate;
• Contribute to development and fundraising initiatives on behalf of the organization.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

• Excellent writing and editing skills;
• Experience producing hard-hitting investigative reports;
• Ability to examine and analyze public records and financial documents from an investigative perspective;
• Capacity to mine social media platforms for forensically valuable data;
• Ability to travel and conduct field-based investigations in difficult reporting environments;
• Experience cultivating and interviewing primary sources;
• Capacity to develop leads for new investigations;
• Understanding of advanced information security and data encryption techniques;
• Ability engaging with or working alongside journalists.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• In-depth knowledge of or experience working or living in East or Central Africa;
• Ability to develop or conceptualize multi-media content to supplement written investigative products;
• French, Arabic, Swahili or Lingala language skills.
