Description

NRGI seeks an Associate to support the implementation of NRGI's 2015-2018 Myanmar strategy. As part of the Myanmar country team, the new hire will be actively involved in NRGI's work with civil society organizations, government institutions and other key stakeholders in the extractive industry as the new government led by the National League for Democracy (NLD) embarks on a series of economic and political reforms to improve resource governance as Myanmar citizens seek to realize the long-term benefits of their to natural wealth. The Associate will report to the Myanmar Manager.


Responsibilities

  • Policy advocacy: Support the Myanmar Officer to monitor the development or revision of EI laws and their implementing rules and regulations; subsequently, support the informed engagement of civil society in the formulation, monitoring and implementation of such policies;
  • External communication: Assist the Myanmar team to effectively communicate report findings and advocacy messages to the government, media and other stakeholders in EI;
  • Capacity building: Support the Myanmar Manager and other staff in providing technical training and campaign management services to civil society groups as they engage with the government and the private sector in implementing the EITI comitments and other broad reforms in resource governance; and
  • Research: Contribute to thorough studies of priority issues in the decision chain of Myanmar's extractive industries under the guidance of concerned NRGI’s staff.

Secondary responsibilities

  • Conduct field trips as needed and present field trip reports to the Myanmar Manager;
  • Represent NRGI in workshops and relevant events in Myanmar as appropriate; and
  • Support the Myanmar Finance and Administrative Assistant work as necessary.

Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • University degree with preference for a master’s degree in law, development studies, political science, journalism, economics, sociology or related fields.
  • Preference for four years of directly relevant work experience, such as experience working in development, environmental and social governance, public administration, policy advocacy, journalism or related issues.
  • Familiarity with the issues of governance in Myanmar’s extractive industries and natural resource management, that include, but are not limited to, transparency and accountability, environmental and human rights protection, civic engagement, economic development, fiscal management, and policy reforms, among others;
  • Experience in public communication and/or working experience in civil society, grant-making; capacity building experience is an advantage; research experience a plus;
  • Experience engaging with government and companies through policy dialogue or related platforms desirable;
  • Ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders and perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong analytical and communication skills (both verbal and written);
  • Native Myanmar speaker; English fluency required;
  • A team player, integrity and professional discretion.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience.

LOCATION: Yangon, Myanmar (with limited travel in country and aboard)
