Dry Land/Rain Fed Agriculture Consultancy: Rain Water Harvesting

People in Need (PIN) Afghanistan is seeking an Evaluation/Research Consultant with expertise in Dry Land/Rain-fed Agriculture, and specifically improved rain-water capture, storage and utilisation interventions utilising a holistic approach encompassing infrastructure and soft components.

PIN, with funding from the European Commission, is implementing a projected titled “Linking Relief to Development in Rainfed Highland Areas of Southern Balkh” in 60 communities in Zare and Kishinde District, focusing on improving food security, income and agricultural productivity in remote rain-fed areas in southern Balkh Province.

The consultant will be expected to:

i. Investigate existing rain-water harvesting techniques, and possibilities for improvement/refinement, paying particular attention to looking at solutions to the problems often presented by the current favoured option of Kanda’s: very poor quality water, difficult to reach in bad weather, limited storage space etc.

ii. Incorporate considerable local geographical, environmental and social background knowledge into the evaluation of predicted success of various techniques

iii. Incorporate a desk review on water harvesting techniques in Afghanistan and other regions with similar environments into the deliverable

iv. Pay particular attention to the availability and durability of materials in proposed solutions

v. Where necessary, suggest methods of social mobilization to support maintenance of any technologies proposed

vi. Bring considerable knowledge of successful techniques used in similar environments to the project
