Background
The Central African Republic (CAR) continues to face political instability, conflict, an acute humanitarian crisis, and insecurity for several decades. The consequences of this prolonged complex crisis are observed in the structural difficulties of national and community institutions, the weaknesses of human capital, the limited human and financial resources of state institutions, the inadequate socio-economic conditions which tend to worsen and do not enable rapid recovery and sustainable development. Although there is notable progress and efforts by the government and international partners towards stabilization, recovery and peacebuilding, challenges remain.
UN Women, founded on the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works to eliminate discrimination against women and girls; women's empowerment; and achieving equality between women and men. In the Central African Republic, UN Women works with the Government, National Institutions, academic institutions, civil society and the media to advance gender equality through the implementation of national and international commitments on gender equality and fundamental rights of women. Since August 2015, UN Women has been present in the Central African Republic and focuses its interventions on achieving the following strategic objectives: the economic empowerment of women; promoting leadership and participation of women in decision-making processes; the fight against violence against women and girls; and the consideration of gender in peace processes and humanitarian response.
UN Women RCA is a member of the United Nations country team and the Humanitarian country team, and to this end, works in synergy with other humanitarian and development actors, in favor of Central African women and girls. UN Women implements its triple mandate, namely normative, operational/programmatic and coordination. At the programmatic level, its interventions are part of an approach of leaving no one behind, of doing no harm, an approach based on human rights as well as the triple nexus: Humanitarian – Development – Peace.

The creation of UN Women is part of the UN reform agenda, which aims to pool resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously separate parts of the United Nations system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
