Reconciling economic growth with climate protection and resource efficiency requires access to affordable and appropriate financing solutions. In many countries, however, markets and frameworks for green financial products and sustainable investments are underdeveloped. adelphi supports clients from politics, business and the financial sector in designing and implementing green financing instruments, both in Europe and in developing and emerging economies.
Job Summary
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for the 21st century, not least in view of the risks it entails for peace and international security. Adelphi has been working on climate-fragility risks for many years, in cooperation with the German Foreign Office and many other ministries, governments and international organizations. adelphi are looking for a creative and dynamic person who can step into the role to help shape political processes and decision making in this domain at the national and international level.
A (Senior) Advisor will take responsibilities across many fields – from preparing international dialogues to overseeing partners, programs and evidence gathering. They will lead research, conceptualize and draft analysis of risks and potential solutions on climate security and climate diplomacy. They will support program-implementers and policy-makers in identifying entry-points for and communications promising approaches.
Tasks
Depending on the applicant background and level of experience, the (Senior) Advisor will:
- Project Management: take responsibility for planning and implementing projects and manage team members, stakeholder networks and dialogues.
- Conceptual Design and Acquisition: develop ideas, analyses and projects on how foreign, development and climate policy can and should evolve in the view of climate-fragility risks, and thereby support the team in acquiring new projects.
- Capacity-Building: design trainings to effectively convey the available knowledge to policy-makers and practitioners from relevant sectors (foreign, development, humanitarian, security, climate policy), and implement these.
- Teamwork: build on expertise and experience in climate, foreign, security and/or development policy and act as a mentor and sparring partner for colleagues.
- Research, Analysis, Policy Advice: bring or develop a thorough understanding of climate security issues and become a trusted contact person for project partners from different sectoral communities.
- Communication: write reports, opinion pieces and develop communication strategies for effectively disseminating the results and insights from projects.
- As a colleague in adelphi’s Climate, Diplomacy and Security team the (Senior) Advisor contributes to the strategic orientation and further development of adelphi’s services; the (Senior) Advisor manage and write successful proposals and participate in other business development activities. The (Senior) Advisor guide and advise junior team members, and exchange with colleagues on a regular basis to continuously advance adelphi’s team’s expertise, quality of services and team spirit.
Qualifications
- Experience and interest in managing complex projects, stakeholder networks and dialogues
- A Master’s degree that relates to the topic
- At least 5-8 years of relevant working experience, eg. in international politics, climate or development policy or practise
- Knowledge of and strong interest in the fields of climate security, conflict analysis and sensitivity, and/or peace-building
- Field research and ability/interest in short-term travel beyond OECD countries, including fragile countries/situations
- Excellent analytical or writing skills, ability to work in teams, and inter-cultural competence
- Competent and confident presenter in international settings, solutions and client-oriented project management
- Flexibility and the ability to work independently
Desired:
- Project implementation experience in peacebuilding/social cohesion/resilience
- Excellent writing and communication in French
- Knowledge/work experience on: integrating environment/climate aspects into peace negotiations and mediation, migration/displacement and climate change, gender and social cohesion in climate and security policy, rural and urban resilience.
- Familiarity with climate change and security arena (actors, processes, events), contacts, networks in the global south
- Publication record targeted at policy audiences
