Summary Description
Reporting to the Myanmar Legal and Policy Advisor, the Myanmar Coordinator will implement the work of our Myanmar program. The coordinator will coordinate and implement EarthRights’ support to communities, civil society partners and alumni network, including documenting and monitoring, training and advocacy. This position will act as the point of contact and support for local communities and civil society partners, and will be responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with these actors to help them identify goals and/or implement strategies in line with EarthRights’ vision, mission and goals.
The position does not require travel to Myanmar.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the development and implementation of program goals, strategies and work plans in line with EarthRights’ mission and strategic plan in consultation with the Myanmar Legal and Policy Advisor.
- Act as the point of contact and support for communities, civil society groups and EarthRights’ Myanmar alumni.
- Support communities and civil society affected by earth rights abuses linked to development projects such as special economic zones, extractives and land seizures including:
- Developing goals and strategies including stakeholder engagement.
- Supporting fact-finding, monitoring and documenting of earth rights abuses.
- Conducting or arranging online or in-person training, workshops and exchange trips.
- Support campaign and advocacy activities in Myanmar, including research, monitoring, reporting, writing, media, public relations, and coalition building.
- Build and collaborate with EarthRights’ networks and partners working on EarthRights issues in Myanmar, including regional networks and networks working on climate justice.
- Work with our Earth Rights Defenders team to ensure that communities and civil society actors can access training and resources to protect their security and wellbeing.
- Work with the EarthRights School and Alumni team to strengthen our alumni network and ensure that alumni in/from Myanmar can access the resources they need to continue supporting communities affected by earth rights abuses.
- Support the integration of gender and social inclusion into all program work.
- Carry out Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) activities.
- Support the development and operations teams carry out donor reporting.
Qualification and Experiences
- At least 5 years of relevant program experiences with human rights and environmental rights organizations in Myanmar, relevant degree preferred but not essential.
- Fluent in Burmese and strong ability to communicate in English (written and spoken).
- Experience working with communities, preferably communities affected by extractive projects and/or environmental and land rights issues.
- Strong understanding of Myanmar legal frameworks and international standards in relation to extractives, land rights, the environment and human rights.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to convey complex issues in a clear and simple way.
- Experience designing and delivering training to civil society organizations and communities, including online.
- Ability to build relationships with key partners (CSOs and communities) and other stakeholders (such as INGOs and IFIs).
- Experience working with communities and/or partners in conflict-affected areas.
- Experience with project management, including design, implementation, gender and social inclusion, monitoring & evaluation and project budgeting.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to be flexible and sensitive in demanding situations.
- Ability to organize work effectively and develop and deliver on work plans.
- Adaptable and flexible, with a willingness to travel within Thailand.
