Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH) is a recognized cooperation partner of ECHO, the Office for Humanitarian Aid of the European Commission, as well as of EuronAid, a network of European non-governmental organisations specialized in food aid and food security.
The project of DKH, introducing new and innovative approaches for aquafarming at the Red Sea Coast in Yemen, implemented by the partner organization Abs Development Organization for Woman and Child (ADO) aims to:
- Create additional employment and income earning opportunities for vulnerable fishermen and fisherwomen communities
- to expanding the depth and breadth of benefits generated from fish farming for the targeted community where the poor women and men can be involved as employees and producers
- Trigger lasting 'systemic' changes in the fish market systems to reduce constraints to growth and to increase its capacity for sustainable livelihoods.
Despite the significance of fish in the livelihoods of traditional fisher communities in the coastal areas of Yemen, DKH feasibility study revealed a massive reduction in income from fishery for all fishery communities over the past years, which stands at about 50-70% of pre-conflict levels. DKH feasibility assessment analysis suggests that a key factor contributing to this low productivity include, among others:
- The ongoing conflict that destroyed their productive asset, and imposed access restrictions either limit or prohibit their movements at sea, reducing the catch they bring ashore
- Lack of awareness and limited technical knowledge among private sector and individuals on aquaculture development
- Insufficient access to innovative and easily adaptable fish farming technologies such as fish cage, hatchery establishment and fish feed facility
- Limited institutional, technical, technological, and research capacities and insufficient budgetary arrangements, absence of comprehensive information on potential aquaculture sites along the coastline, lack of clear policy and legislative frameworks,
