ALTSEAN-Burma (the Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma), a Bangkok-based human rights group, works with a broad range of people from Southeast Asia and beyond, to promote the cause of human rights and democracy in Burma.

They are looking for a special projects intern focused on climate change for 4 months, with possibility of extension. Preferred starting date is early January 2021. ALTSEAN reserves the right to interview and/or appoint suitable candidates at its earliest convenience, so early applications are encouraged.

This position will give the successful applicant the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of ALTSEAN and activists who work in challenging conditions for human rights in Burma. This position will suit an individual who is highly efficient, comfortable working in close collaboration with a team of diverse people, willing to work long hours and able to observe the discipline and security protocols of the office, while maintaining a sense of humor.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are necessary for this role. Experience in the Burma movement or other human rights movements will be an advantage.

This role will require working in close collaboration with Debbie, Alex, Dan and Shevon.

Duties

  1. Research and develop analysis of climate change impacts on Burma, with reference to global and other country situations. Note: much of the Burma-specific data may be available on MIMU.
  2. Work with other team members to deepen climate change analysis in the context of other factors, particularly COVID and conflict in the country, with an intersectional lens.
  3. Produce basic visualizations and other workshop content that can be used to raise awareness and generate a call to action and intersectoral strategies.
  4. Support the organization and implementation of 4 online workshops, the strategy session of the ALTSEAN Stakeholder Assembly to mark the 25th anniversary of the organization, and related documentation.
  5. Other duties as directed.

Terms of Contract

The successful applicant may opt to work remotely or at our office in Bangkok. Duration of 4 months (with possibility of extension and/or fulltime employment, subject to work performance, team dynamics and funding).

  • Minimum of 40 working hours per week, excluding public holidays.
  • 12 days annual leave per 12 months or pro-rata equivalent.
  • A monthly allowance of 11,000 Thai baht is allocated for this position. 
  • A month-long probation period applies.

Although this role will be an internship, the successful applicant will hold the title of Climate Change and BHR Consultant.

For Staff Based at The Office

Breakfast and lunch available at the office on workdays.

Subsidized accommodation provided in a furnished room at the office or at an apartment used for security storage, depending on availability of either option, for the course of the probation period. Interns who opt to stay at their own accommodation may be given a small transport allowance.

If the successful applicant wishes to relocate to Bangkok for this role, additional costs resulting from Thai government COVID-related restrictions will need to be negotiated.
