The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a policy institute that generates knowledge and informs decision-making towards a water wise world. SIWI conducts research, builds institutional capacity and provides advisory services in areas related to water governance, transboundary water cooperation, and WASH. SIWI organises the World Water Week in Stockholm - the leading annual global meeting place on water and development issues - and hosts the Stockholm Water Prize and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.

The Tranboundary Water Cooperation Department implements the Shared Waters Partnership, a global platform that works to improve cooperation over shared waters in regions where water is, or may become, a source of conflict or where water can serve as a catalyst for peace. The Department also host the UNESCO Category II International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC), providing knowledge and capacity through international research, training, outreach and policy advice.

The Transboundary Water Cooperation Department at SIWI is currently recruiting a Programme Officer to become an enthusiastic member of the team and contribute to the development and implementation of the department’s portfolio.

Description of Duties

The Programme Officer (PO) will support the implementation and development of activities related to transboundary water cooperation with a focus on conflict sensitive basins. The PO will coordinate and contribute to the development and implementation of specific aspects of the SWP and ICWC. The PO will also implement and support programmes and interventions across the organisation.

Description of duties:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Shared Waters Partnership (SWP) programme and the International Center for Water Cooperation (ICWC) hosted by SIWI.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops / trainings for boundary partners as needed.
  • Conduct applied research and contribute to analysis and policy reports (such as articles/briefs/blogs)
  • Develop and/or contribute to the development of knowledge products, training materials, methodologies and tools.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of SWP basin Networks.
  • Take part in relevant SIWI and TWC Department meetings and planning processes
  • Contribute to the general administrative work of the Transboundary Water Cooperation Department and SIWI at large in compliance with SIWI requirements
  • Provide support to SIWI management and direct delivery of projects, including financial and administrative oversight and reporting, results reporting and initiating and acting as project contact point during related audit processes.
  • Contribute to ensuring the department’s compliance regarding SIWI Project Cycle Management and related policies and processes.
  • Develop marketing and communications materials for TWC in collaboration with the SIWI communications team to ensure the promotion of current and planned activities.
  • Other activities and assignments as determined by TWC Director.

Expected knowledge and skills

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following features:

Language

  • The applicant must have excellent spoken, written and presentation skills in English.
  • The ability to speak Arabic, French, or Spanish is considered an advantage.

Education and work experience

  • A Master’s degree in a field relevant to Transboundary Water Cooperation
  • At least 2-3 years of relevance experience

Availability to travel

Ability and willingness to travel and be part of short term missions is required.

Duty Station

The position will be based at the main office of the Stockholm International Water Institute, in Stockholm Sweden

Duration of contract

The position is a two-year contract fixed term employment with subject to renewal upon good performance and availability of funds.
