The Sentry is a team of policy analysts, regional experts, and financial forensic investigators that follows the money in order to create consequences for those funding and profiting from genocide or other mass atrocities in Africa, and to build leverage for peace. The Sentry currently focuses on the corrupt transnational networks linked to those most responsible for deadly violence in South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Central African Republic (CAR). The Sentry’s ultimate objective is to alter the incentive structure of those benefiting financially and politically from conflict and mass atrocities. This will lend greater support to broader accountability measures as well as provide leverage to peace and human rights initiatives aimed at ending Africa’s deadliest conflicts. Co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast in 2016, The Sentry is an initiative of the Enough Project.

Position Summary

The investigator will work primarily and closely with other investigators, policy staff, and contractors to help develop, lead, and produce innovative and impactful reports and other materials. The policy objective is to focus on policy, financial, and law enforcement tools and approaches that can be deployed in relevant jurisdictions to impede the financing of conflict and corruption in and the laundering of the proceeds of corruption from the DRC.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute public-facing investigations into financial crimes, corruption, and natural resource extraction linked to violence in the DRC
  • Write and contribute to write public facing reports, stories, and articles
  • Contribute to dossiers and other written materials provided by The Sentry to government agencies, law enforcement bodies, lawmakers, financial institutions, and their regulators
  • Propose and develop other multimedia materials that can help communicate cases
  • Assist efforts to build strong partnerships with policymakers, law enforcement, civil society, financial community, judicial community, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Routinely engage with sources, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the private sector, as appropriate
  • Contribute to development and fundraising initiatives on behalf of the organization.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Hold at least five years of relevant experience in government, journalism, advocacy, advanced academic research, or the private sector, including three years of experience conducting investigations
  • Experience identifying, cultivating, and interviewing primary sources for investigations
  • Possess an understanding of politics, economics, and security in Africa
  • Ability to travel and conduct field-based investigations in difficult reporting environments
  • Ability to examine and analyze public records and financial documents from an investigative perspective
  • Experience using open-source investigative methods
  • Excellent writing, editing, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Professional proficiency in French and English is required, including the ability to conduct technically complex interviews in both languages
  • Ability to work independently and yet still be team-oriented
  • Proactive, self-motivated, detailed oriented, and well-organized
  • Demonstrated proactive leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate responsively and proactively when working remotely
  • Must have authorization to travel to the U.S.
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Knowledge of the DRC and surrounding countries is a plus, but not required.
