Iraqi troops advanced toward the northern Iraqi city of Beiji on Tuesday, exchanging heavy fire with militants from the Islamic State group, footage from a local broadcaster showed.

Beiji is home to Iraq's largest oil refinery, accounting for a little more than a quarter of the country's entire refining capacity.

The footage from Al Iraqiya Television showed soldiers firing machine guns and artillery from behind a trench toward a building bearing the black ISIS flag, where the militants were hiding.

One soldier could also be seen firing a rocket propelled grenade and celebrating after hitting a target.
