Defiant farmers in Mandalay Region are cultivating fields they say they own as negotiations with the local authorities broke down. The 200 farmers began harrowing the fields, which are slated for a golf resort, on September 25 in preparation for planting. The farmers, in Yaykyi village, Patheingyi township, say more than 600 acres were seized from 50 farmers in 1996 and 1997. Mandalay City Development Committee subsequently used about half of the land for a 27-hole golf course known as Yetagun Taung, while the rest was left as farmland.
