This field-based course is designed for community development workers, human rights advocates, environmentalists and other civil society actors who are working with Indigenous People that are facing resource-based conflicts related to the mining industry. This course will explore themes such as the nature and causes of resource-based conflicts within the Higaonon and Subanen tribal communities in Mindanao and their strategies to engage mining companies interested in operating in their ancestral domains.
The participants will have the opportunity to directly interact with tribal leaders and to learn from them how conflict transformation and peacebuilding tools can be interfaced with traditional conflict resolution approaches, and legal and judicial processes. Visits will be to mineral-rich tribal communities in Northwestern Mindanao that have experienced resource-based conflicts and have been a part of MPI's Resource-Based Conflict and Peacebuilding Training Program.
