One of the impacts of climate change and climate variability on already strained natural resources (such as land and water) is the exacerbation of competition over resources. This can contribute to forced migration of pastoralists and agriculturalists and intensify pre-existing tensions and create conflict between these groups. Without effective natural resource management and peace-building strategies in place, from a national to a local level, food insecurity and conflict will only get worse thus reducing the resilience of communities.
