While there is an extensive body of international law governing armed conflicts, no coherent legal framework exists for post-conflict situations. The current Research Handbook on International law and Environmental Peacebuilding seeks to address this gap insofar as it concerns the governance of natural resources and the environment. Reference can in this regard be made to the concept of Jus post bellum, which has been used both for attempts to present a special legal regime for the aftermath of conflict, and as an umbrella term for international legal norms, standards and good practices applied during the transition from armed conflict to peace. The Research Handbook is closer to the latter understanding of the concept. Instead of presenting a general legal theory for the post-conflict phase of the conflict cycle, the book provides a systematic overview of the different international normative and institutional frameworks that are available to advance the objectives of environmental peacebuilding. By focusing on international legal responses to challenges identified in post-conflict environmental peacebuilding, the book opens a new perspective to an area, which has for most part either not elaborated on the legal aspects of peacebuilding or has concentrated on issues related to national legal reforms. With this novel approach, the book will be of interest to practitioners and scholars alike.
