The eight countries of South Asia are currently at the heart of the debate on the nexus between energy, environment and sustainable development. South Asia is both one of the most energy insecure regions in the world and one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Chronic energy shortages, dependence on costly imported hydrocarbons that increase the threat of climate change and constraints to renewable energy due to financial, behavioural and technical limitations, combine to create a set of complex and interlinked problems that need to be urgently addressed in order for the region to continue to grow while pervasive poverty is addressed.
