Across the United Nations, virtually all of the various programs, agencies, and affiliates have wrestled with how to address climate change as part of their work. The World Health Organization launched a special initiative on climate change and health in small-island developing states. The Department of Peacekeeping Operations has sought to “green the blue helmets” by reducing the climate, water, and waste footprints of peacekeeping missions. The International Labour Organization supports “green jobs” programs in more than 30 countries. Secretary-General Guterres, who describes climate change as “the defining issue of our time,” has stressed that it affects every aspect of the UN's work.
