The Center for Climate and Security and IISS-Americas will be hosting a panel on climate change impacts on the security of the Asia-Pacific region, and the implications on US security. The security threats of climate change have been a priority area of the Department of Defense and Congress since the H.W. Bush administration. Geopolitics and security fragilities in the Asia-Pacific region will be further shaped by increasing natural disasters, impacts of coastal infrastructure and populations, the altering of maritime boundaries delimitations due to sea level rise, greater food insecurity, and irregular migration flow. As a result, the Asia-Pacific region is vulnerable to the security impacts of climate change. This discussion, featuring high-level experts from the Center for Climate and Security, will explore these risks, how US military installations, operations, and strategies in the region may be shaped by them, and their influence on US bilateral and multilateral relationships.
