Although there has been considerable research on environmental factors contributing to conflict, the reverse prospect of peace-building linked to ecological harmony has only been presented conceptually and through descriptive narrative of cases. So far there is no in-depth study, which would trace diplomatic decision-makers to address the question: How does the inclusion of environmental factors in negotiations around international conflicts influence cooperative behaviour? An effective response to this question could provide diplomats with an underutilized bargaining strategy that would make a pragmatic case for an ecological approach to national security that is cooperative rather than predicated on a fear of conflict. This presentation will explore ways by which research could be undertaken empirically to address this question and present some tentative findings from the scoping analysis undertaken this far. Guest lecture in collaboration with the Department of Peace and Conflict Research.
