Finance and Flood: Large Dams as a Flashpoint for Conflict

Sep 25, 2014 | Center for International Environmental Law
Washington, DC

We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 25th for the next in our 25th anniversary discussion series with Brent Blackwelder on Finance and Flood: Large Dams as a Flashpoint for Conflict.
Belo Monte.  Grand Renaissance.  Barro Blanco. From the Amazon Basin to the Ethiopian Highlands, from the Mekong River to the Isthmus of Panama, a new wave of dam-building is bringing displacement, human rights violations and, too often, violence to communities around the world.  Despite a decades-long history of controversy and conflict, the World Bank and other international financial institutions are once again investing in mega-dam projects in the name of energy access, poverty alleviation and climate mitigation.  Brent Blackwelder will discuss the links between energy vulnerability, conflict and dams and the ongoing campaign to stop global public finance for these devastating projects.

*This series will provide a forum to reflect on the ground that we've gained over the past 25 years, and to learn from each other to build more effective, more informed strategies for changing the world through law. To that end, each event will include a presentation by a featured speaker followed by a candid, informal discussion among all attendees.
