The provisions of international humanitarian law for the protection of the environment during conflict are notoriously lacking. However, peacetime environmental norms and standards, and developments at the interface between environmental and human-rights law provide opportunities for progress.

The Toxic Remnants of War Project (TRWP) analyses how greater scrutiny of the environmental and public-health legacy of conflict pollution could help improve the protection of the environment, and those civilians who depend on it, before, during and after conflict.
