Water, Sanitation, COVID-19, and Cooperation in the Middle East

The UN Secretary-General recently called for a global ceasefire considering the unprecedented threats posed by COVID-19 in conflict-affected areas. The Middle East, the most water scarce area on the planet and identified by the IPCC as a climate hot spot, is now also heavily affected by the current pandemic. Lack of access to clean water in households and hospitals may have devastating impacts in the region, putting at risk the life of the most vulnerable groups, such as refugees. The large scale discharge of untreated and poorly treated wastewater may further exacerbate the risks to public health and contaminate already scarce water resources. To examine these issues, the Environmental Peacebuilding Association and its Interest Group on Water are convening a webinar to discuss the challenges of COVID-19 and the opportunities presented for conflict resolution and peacebuilding in the region.
