Climate change is a major threat to human wellbeing and development, but does it also impact the dynamics of violent conflict and peacebuilding? This talk explores the security implications of climate change with a focus on climate-related disasters such as droughts, flood and storms in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Do such disasters aggravate violent conflicts by causing grievances and providing opportunity structures for armed groups? Or do they rather facilitate conflict de-escalation through disaster diplomacy and environmental peacebuilding?
Dr Tobias Ide is a DECRA Research Fellow at the School of Geography, University of Melbourne (Australia) and an associated assistant professor in International Relations at the Brunswick University of Technology (Germany). He published widely on peacebuilding, violent conflict, environmental politics, climate change and international security.
Moderator Kristin Weis is a community resilience and coastal management consultant. Ms. Weis co-chairs the EnPAx Disasters and Resilience Interest Group, which is sponsoring this seminar.
