In this webinar, IMPACT will walk participants through its M&E system and provide examples of how the analysis generated by the data can be rendered actionable to achieve measurable SDG results. We will focus on the measurements of gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and the peace and security contexts of women living and working in resource-rich communities in conflict-affected contexts.
IMPACT, formerly Partnership Africa Canada, transforms how natural resources are managed in areas where security and human rights are at risk. We investigate and develop approaches for natural resources to improve security, development, and equality. We are an independent non-profit, collaborating with local partners for lasting change. Since 1986 and together with our partners throughout Africa, we have brought international attention to the role that high-value commodities – such as diamonds, coltan, and gold – play in driving, financing, or sustaining conflict.
As part of our efforts to improve the management of the diamond supply chain, we were a founding member of the Kimberley Process (KP) that endeavored to certify rough diamonds as conflict-free. We contributed to the development of a regional certification mechanism for gold, tin, tungsten and tantalum in Africa’s Great Lakes Region. We have supported the development and implementation of the OECD’s private sector guidelines that promote transparency and due diligence in mineral supply chains from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas. Also, since 2012, we have operationalized a supply chain due diligence system applicable to artisanally mined gold from the DR Congo. Parallel to these efforts, we have also sought to better understand and to address gendered inequalities and insecurities in artisanal mining communities and supply chains.
It is by combining the latter two areas of work that we had come to document how women and men were not benefiting equally from efforts to render supply chains of conflict-prone commodities more ‘responsible’. It was this realization and our broader commitment to providing evidence that communities were benefiting from these various systems and initiatives that drove us to further develop our Monitoring and Evaluation system. We saw a need to combine supply chain data with evidence of lasting impacts on local security and development. We wanted to know where we were making a lasting difference and, if not, where and how we can course correct.
