Arid and semi-arid regions suffer from several water problems such as desertification, water scarcity, upstream country development and climate change impacts. Egypt shares common concerns with many regional and international conglomerates, such as the Arab region, which suffers from water scarcity and is characterized by a vast desert. At the same time, Egypt is part of the Mediterranean basin facing environmental problems due to climate change and sea level rise. Egypt is also part of the African region and is generally characterized by high levels of poverty and poor access to infrastructure and social services.
Cairo Water Week will promote water awareness, foster new thinking about the most pressing water-related challenges and take actions towards integrated water resources management and conservation for sustainable development.
One of the conference’s five main themes is “Transboundary Water Governance and Benefit Sharing.” The topics to be explored within the thematic technical sessions are:
- Transboundary rivers for navigation, trade and development
- Water governance in achieving a green economy
- Civil society engagement in water governance
- Effective cooperation and conflict resolution
- Potential and priority areas for cooperation
- Successful models from global practices
- Water governance for poverty alleviation
- Hydro-diplomacy for benefit sharing
- Basin-wide water security
