The course will address environmental and natural resource conflicts that are familiar and topical for the course participants. These cases provide a real-world context for the course contents and the development of practical skills. The themes include natural resource conflicts for example in the fields of forestry, nature conservation, mining and land use conflicts more generally. Students are expected to work with concrete conflict cases along the course program. The course is constructed around a framework of environmental collaboration and conflict resolution. It starts with the introduction of collaborative management and participatory methods and continues with the theory and practice of collaboration, mediation and consensus building. It includes elements of interest-based negotiation theory at its core and builds on the collaborative model of consensus building.

Pre-course reading materials and tasks, lectures, group work, presentations, and an excursion during the course as well as reports/essays after the course. To complete the course and get the ECTS credits Master’s student needs to participate in 80% of course sessions as well as actively carry out group work and reading outside of course sessions.

The maximum number of participants is 40.

PARTICIPANT FEES IN 2024

  • Participant, normal fee: 500 euros for 2-week-course, 300 euros for 1-week-course.
  • Participant from a UEF partner university: 400 euros for 2-week-course, 250 euros for 1-week-course.
  • Incoming UEF exchange student: 200 euros for 2-week-course, 200 euros for 1-week-course.

Tuition Fee€300 one-timeEntry qualification Currently studying at Master level or higher. Bachelor level basic studies e.g. in field of environmental politics, forest policy and economics, environmental issues, natural resources governance, sociology or political science. Or studies/practical experience in environmental conflict situations.The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English. Often you can get a suitable transcript from your school. If this is not the case, you will need official translations along with verified copies of the original.Language RequirementsEnglishOther Requirements A motivation letter must be added to your application.The motivation letter serves the purpose of demonstrating how the students meet the eligibility criteria of the course and their own personal motivation to complete the course program. When students prepare the motivation letter, they should allow themselves some time to formulate it in good English and with a good structure.The motivation letter should be between 100 (min) and 600 (max) words in length.The motivation letter should contain three different sets of information:
  1. The educational or professional background of the applicant.
  2. Information on how the course might be beneficial to the applicant´s professional growth or academic career
  3. Motivation and capacity of the applicant to actively take part and contribute to the activities of the course
