Marine Pollution, Maps, and Memory: Young Researchers in Environmental Peacebuilding (A Road to Geneva Event)

May 12, 2021 | Young Rapporteurs Programme of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association
online

This event was recorded and can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/zp8pylWfDUQ

This event is a panel discussion between three Young Rapporteurs who have conducted master's research on environmental conflict and cooperation. The three ongoing case studies discussed in this session span a wide range of topics in environmental peacebuilding, looking at issues in different continents and at different stages of the conflict lifecycle; they also incorporate various environmental aspects. The event will highlight findings, draw out shared insights, and discuss the role of student research in growing our knowledge base around environmental peacebuilding.

This session also aims to showcase one of EnPAx’s special initiatives, the Road to Geneva Young Rapporteurs program. The program engages over 100 students and young professionals—representing some 40 countries—around environmental peacebuilding through event reporting, mentorship, workshops, and other professional development opportunities.

The panel will be chaired by Munini Mutuku. Ms. Munini works as a peacebuilding practitioner engaging with issues related to natural resource based conflicts, human rights, development, transitional justice, gender and youth, environmental peacebuilding, amongst other themes. She is a member of the Bosch Alumni Network and Africa Director and board member at the Environmental Peacebuilding Association.

Opening remarks will be made by Carl Bruch, President of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association.

The panelists include:

  • Braiya White: "Legal protections for the environment in relation to armed conflict: FSO SAFER and the Yemeni Civil War"
Braiya is an environmental scientist with expertise in water resources and pollution. She also has qualifications in maritime law and policy. She undertook this research as part of a post-graduate research program at the University of Wollongong, Australia in 2020.
  • Madi Vorva: "Participatory mapping and land conflict: The World Bank Ombudsman and Cambodia’s Ratanakiri Case"
Madi Vorva is a sustainable supply chain certification auditor at SCS Global Services. Prior to joining SCS, Madi graduated from the University of Cambridge with her MPhil in Environmental Policy. Her dissertation research evaluated the impact of participatory mapping in land dispute mediation.
  • Anna Rossi: "Leveraging Trauma for Peace: Integrating Collective Memory and Conservation Planning in Colombia's Conflict Context"
In August 2020, Anna graduated with her MS in Environmental Studies, focusing on collaborative governance and conflict resolution. Most recently, Anna volunteered with the Environmental Peacebuilding Association to develop the Colombia Arc series, which culminated in the “Environmental Governance for Peace in Colombia'' conference held in March. Anna has an MA certificate in Peacebuilding from Los Andes University and a BS in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics.
