WaterAid and Women - How WaterAid is Tackling Gender Inequality

WaterAid is an international charity set up in 1981 by the UK water authorities. These bodies recognised the need for better access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in countries in the developing world. Since then, WaterAid has been successful in supporting communities to improve the situation in many counties. This talk will provide a general overview of the work of WaterAid with a focus on women’s rights and the impact of Climate Change on decision making.

Women and girls are often disproportionately impacted by the effects of water scarcity and lack of sanitation. WaterAid identifies and challenges the barriers to equality and ensures that a human rights based approach is built into all projects from the outset. There is still much to be done and climate change adds an extra challenge.

This talk will be delivered by Penelope Smith who is a volunteer speaker for WaterAid.
