Environmental protection and restoration are contingent on robust data but armed conflicts create data gaps that are challenging to plug. Since 2018, CEOBS has worked closely with NPA on environmental mainstreaming in the mine action sector. In late 2024, the MBT review conference in Cambodia demonstrated just how far the sector has come since then.
While much of the focus has been on reducing the impact of clearance activities, and on what happens to land that is cleared, there is another role that mine action operators can play: facilitating field access for environmental research. Organisations like NPA and the Halo Trust are increasingly fulfilling this role and, in a new report with NPA, we present what this can look like in practice. CEOBS cooperated with NPA on a sampling campaign in southern Ukraine exploring the environmental consequences of the use of explosive weapons. Projects like this can help bridge remote and local environmental assessments, and help inform response and policy change.
The joint report on the project will be launched at a webinar on the 16th Jan, registration is open via Zoom.
