Result of Service

The ultimate result of the services is that UN Environment carries out meaningful activities to improve the environmental performance of the extractive sector in a systematic and strategic manner, with strengthened partnerships, increased funding and demonstrable results.

Expected duration

The assignment will be for 12 months of work, beginning 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Oli Brown and drawing on lessons learnt from previous activities carried out by UN Environment in the extractive sector, the consultant will carry out the following tasks:

Coordinate implementation of UN Environment work plan of the Extractive and Environment hub for 2018, and promote information sharing, synergies and coherence in UN Environment activities in the extractive sector, in collaboration with relevant UN Environment divisions, branches and programmes.
Refine and monitor UN Environment strategy towards the extractives sector, working with the Policy and Programme division, relevant UN Environment teams and partners; promote high-level policy engagement of stakeholders in the extractive sector including in international environmental law and policies;
Provide technical advice and support to the Extractive and Environment Hub and relevant UN Environment teams when appropriate on environmental impacts of the extractive sector and positioning and mainstreaming of UN Environment expertise in relevant issues and projects.
Consolidate and maintain strategic partnerships at the institutional level on the extractive sector with International organizations (including with the Intergovernmental Forum on Mines, Minerals and Sustainable Development, UNDP, IUCN, WWF and others), Member States (Canada, Netherlands, EU) and private sector (IPIECA, ICMM, Major Companies), promoting high-level policy engagement. Deliver 4 (Quarterly) 2-age updates of concrete outputs and outcomes generated from the strategic partnerships.
Act as UN environment spokesperson on the extractive sector and represent UN Environment in relevant forums, events and media to advocate for better environmental performance in the sector.
Lead internal and external communication on the extractive sector for UN Environment by developing and managing high-quality content, lead maintenance of the web page dedicated to the extractive sector; lead internal group exchanges, newsletter etc.
Mobilize resources for UN Environment activities in the extractive sector

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: A Masters degree in Environmental Affairs, International Relations, Geological Science (or similar)
Experience: A minimum of 5 to 7 years of professional experience in a policy advocacy or international development programme coordination role. Substantial and demonstrated experience dealing with extractives industries with specific focus on sustainable development aspects.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
