Conservation Officer - Tropical Forest Landscapes

Do you have a passion for tropical forests and their global conservation? Do you have knowledge of the drivers of deforestation and the complexity of managing forest landscapes for conservation and local livelihoods in a variety of different contexts? The RSPB Tropical Forest Landscapes Unit (TFLU) is looking for a self-motivated, organised, competent and creative individual to join their team as Programme Officer. This is an exciting new opportunity to work closely with the Tropical Forest Landscapes Programme Managers, in-country managers, and Birdlife International Partners to help deliver large scale on-the-ground forest landscape conservation and forest commodity sustainability projects in Africa and Asia, in particular Indonesia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, and through Birdlife’s Forest of Hope Programme

 

Key elements of the job would involve:

  • Daily support to the Burung Indonesia/ PT REKI Harapan Rainforest Programme Team based in Indonesia
  • Daily management of RSPB Technical Advisors based in Indonesia
  • Leading RSPB reporting for the Harapan Rainforest Programme
  • Leading the development and management of communications and fund-raising strategies for the TFLU
  • Leading communication pieces to internal and external (international audiences) for the TFLU work programmes
  • Working with the Programme Managers, Head of Section and Birdlife Partners to help scope and develop new TFLU tropical forest work and commodity supply chains projects
  • Take a lead role in programme fund-raising and proposal writing, working with International Fund-raising Unit, through individual donors, international funding programmes, foundations, corporates, RSPB supporters; and managing donor relations as required
  • Managing consultancy contracts, and procurement
  • Managing distinct projects, including budgets and work plans
  • Managing risks, and highlighting arising issues as appropriate
  • Assist coordination efforts with Birdlife’s Forest of Hope Programme

The post holder will be a member of the RSPB/ Tropical Forest Landscapes Unit and participate in establishing its objectives and achieving its goals.

 
The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail, have strong project management skills, be an excellent communicator, be driven and flexible in their work approach, and have experience of conservation projects in tropical forests. Bahasa Indonesia language skills are an advantage. The post will involve some international travel, possibly unsupervised.
 

The role may require providing support to other activities of the Team, the International Directorate or the wider RSPB upon request.
