In September 2011, Myanmar President Thein Sein dropped a bombshell on his country's previously close relations with China. Citing the public interest, he announced that construction of China's largest hydroelectric project in Southeast Asia -- the $3.6 billion-plus Myitsone dam project in northern Myanmar -- would be suspended for the duration of his term.
